In the early 90s the British Government decided to send prisoners serving short term sentences over on humanitarian service. Some went to Romania to help with the schools, the hospitals and the orphanages. Some of them were real Brutes. Gary discovers the misery of the Romanian orphans under the merciless rule of Sincai. He tries to escape and gets caught, which allows him to learn more about the kids, some of which are adopted for cash, some of which are very sick. The doctor in charge doesn't seem to be able to do much as the charity funds simply vanish... Gary falls in love with a nurse and starts caring for the first time of his life.
